Broadcasting Colleges - Radio, TV, Sports

Broadcasting colleges may be classified into two kinds. The first are institutions, mostly universities that grant broadcasting degrees. The second offer short courses. Both may conduct classes onsite or online.  Because radio is the older medium, there are more radio broadcasting colleges. But many now offer multimedia courses such as in a television broadcasting school.

This is a survey of the variety of programs offered by today's broadcasting schools. Some are the top broadcasting colleges in their states. The range of programs they offer vary in emphasis and content.

Oswego State University of New York


The Bachelor's Degree in Communications is for those who have Associate degrees in Broadcasting, Radio/TV, Mass Communications, Media Studies or related programs.

Broadcasting degrees and courses can be taken online through the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) and can be completed in two years. A graduate can go on to a career in radio, television, internet or satellite broadcasts.

TC3

TC3 offers the AAS Degree in Broadcast Production. Students from TC3 like many top broadcasting colleges learn using the latest broadcast technology with instruction from trained professional instructors.

The program for broadcasting degrees allows students to either choose or combine television, radio, and digital media courses to design their own program of study.

City College of San Francisco


This campus, like many radio broadcasting schools, has a student-operated radio station, KCSF 90.9 'The Zone' and a television station, Educational Access Television (EATv).

There are broadcasting courses in that include these subjects:

Students may earn the Broadcast Journalism Certificate of Completion in:

Santa Ana College   

The school offers these technical oriented broadcasting degrees:

* Associate of Arts in Television/Video Communications
* Certificate in Television and Video Communications with concentration in:
o Broadcast Journalism
o Television Production
o Television Scriptwriter
o Digital Media Post-Production

Students from this television broadcasting school learn in a commercial quality four-camera television studio and are taught by industry professionals. The curriculum centers on television and includes courses on Information and Society, Television Production and Broadcast News.

University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication

The school's radio and television production facilities are state-of-the-art. Broadcast education includes experience in student-operated radio and television stations.

Subjects include:

* Radio and Television News Production

University of Pittsburgh at Bradford

This school conducts the Bachelor of Arts degree program with a major in Broadcast Communications. The campus has an all-digital television studio and two digital radio facilities. It also has advanced video and audio editing systems. Students work on the latest video production gear.

Seton Hall University

This university's BA Major in Broadcasting, Visual and Interactive Media encompasses training in multimedia, the Web, desktop publishing, computer graphics, television, radio and film production. Experienced faculty teach in a state-of-the-art television studio and computer labs. Students gain experience through community media facilities, WSOU 89.5 FM radio and Pirate TV.

Grand Valley State University

The Broadcasting major has foundations in media theory and critical thinking. The Broadcast News emphasis is for students interested in careers as reporters, news producers, or news writers. The Production emphasis is for students interested in behind-the-scenes careers, such as producers, directors, writers, and editors.

Drury University

This university follows the trend of broadcasting colleges merging different media disciplines. Its Integrated Media Major (Broadcasting and Journalism) encompasses critical analysis, ethical standards, reporting and writing for print, broadcast and online media platforms.

Radio and TV production and programming as well as Internet communication are taught in the college's television studio and radio station.

The Broadcasters Mentoring Group

This is an alternative to traditional broadcasting colleges. This school mentors aspiring DJ's, talk hosts and sportscasters. The classroom is a radio station close to home. The mentor is a working broadcaster. The course takes up to six months.
 
Training is conducted wherever radio stations exist in the US and Canada. Schedules can be part-time, weekends or evenings. BMG has a four-point job placement system
   
Radio Broadcasting Schools and Television Broadcasting

The Radio Broadcasting Course is a comprehensive training workshop combining hands-on training and live broadcasts from fully equipped studios.

Weekly workshops include programming, commercial production, sportscasting, music programming, station management, and broadcast sales.

International Broadcasting Colleges

The Associate Degree Program in Applied Science of Communication Arts in Radio and Television gives students radio and television training. This can be applied as well in business and industrial communications.

Students from international broadcasting colleges graduating from this program would be qualified for entry-level positions in small and medium broadcast markets. The program is 64 semester credit hours. Both day and evening classes are offered.

University of Phoenix

The Associate of Arts Communications curriculum provides a foundation and overview within the academic disciplines of communications, social sciences, mathematics and the humanities.

The course include news presentations for print, web, and broadcast delivery. Students review the development of mass media and formulate theories on its future evolution.

Ohio University

The Bachelor of Science in Journalism program has a daily laboratory news broadcast, Athens MidDay.

Students can get practical experience preparing and broadcasting news over WOUB AM, FM, and TV, the University's radio and television stations, and over the local cable television system.

These school's programs vary in scope and duration. Together they build the pool of local and national talent for the industry. The curriculum in broadcasting colleges expand as technology advances the broadcast media.
